What is a mandolin orchestra?

The Mandolin Orchestra

Mandolin orchestras were intensely popular in the early 20th century throughout the United States until the time of World War I. The instruments of the mandolin orchestras were relatively inexpensive and easy to play, and they mirrored the instruments of the classical string orchestra. The orchestras also added other instruments into the mix such as guitar and banjo.

Mandolin orchestras can play standard classical repertoires; however, many pieces of all levels of complexity have been composed specifically for the mandolin orchestra as well. In modern times, mandolin orchestras have had a resurgence in popularity as interest in folk music has increased. The Classical Mandolin Society has 71 active mandolin orchestras listed on its website. Mandolin orchestras are found throughout the country and worldwide.
